Oil to Gas Conversions

An oil to gas conversion replaces an oil fired boiler or furnace with a high efficiency gas unit, and it is more than swapping the appliance. It means coordinating the gas service with the utility, running and pressure testing new gas piping, sizing the new boiler to what the house actually needs rather than what the old one was, new venting and combustion air, tying into the existing heating loops or steam mains, and dealing with the abandoned oil tank and line.

Homeowners call about this for cost and for reliability. Oil deliveries have to be scheduled and paid in lumps, the tank is a liability whether it is in the basement or in the yard, and an oil burner needs more service each year than a gas unit does. On a house that already has gas at the meter for cooking or hot water, the conversion is usually smaller than people expect.

The part that decides whether a conversion goes well is sizing and piping, not the brand on the boiler. Most oil boilers in these houses are badly oversized for the load, and installing a gas boiler of the same rating just moves the problem to a new fuel.
